Workshop: Building Themes: A Primer

If you’ve ever wanted to build your own theme for WordPress, this is the session for you. We’re going to start from scratch and work our way up. This tutorial assumes HTML and CSS knowledge, though there is no level of PHP requirement. We’ll go through all of the core files needed for a theme; some supplemental features that can be added; and how themes should be structured for clients, public free release, and sales sites. We’ll also cover some tools that can help with your theme development.

Workshop: How to offboard your clients and reduce post launch support while empowering your clients

Many web designers and developers complete a website, hand over login information, and… that’s it. Back to the hustle of finding new clients. But the client they just finished working with is left high and dry with a million questions about what to do next.

Then, instead of telling all their friends about what a great web designer they worked with, they’re frustrated, and complain about how they don’t know how to use this new website they paid thousands of dollars for. Uh-oh.

Instead of completing a project and giving clients the boot, it’s important to offboard them in a way that helps them use their new website, answers their questions, and helps them sing your praises so you get new clients rolling in. If you offboard your clients correctly, you can even keep them coming back, again and again for additional services, reducing your need to hustle up new clients altogether.

In my workshop I explain how to offboard clients easily, giving them more control of their website, and helping you spend less time in after-project support.

Workshop: WP-CLI – Don’t Fear The Command Line

It’s time to make the robots do all the things we can make them do. Machines can do just about anything as long as you give them the properly formed instructions. Fortunately for us WordPress allows us to give these instructions in an easy to learn and very robust manner called The WP-CLI. It is the fastest way to install, active and update any theme, plugin or just about anything else in your WordPress site.
In this presentation I will demonstrate a simple install script that will have a fully functioning, customized WP website in about the same time than it normally takes download the WordPress.zip file. We will also look for how third party tools and hosts are leveraging the WP-CLI to make your life as a developer even easier.

Walk away with:
-A new appreciation for the command line.
-The desire to script ‘all the things’ to save time.
-Knowledge of serious time saving tools
-Ideas about how to automate your processes to be more productive and profitable
